Teams considers messages to agents as user messages

Is there a better way to extract just the back & forth messages between the user & team leader? The runs in memory seem haphazard and filter on role doesn't work (for example: team leader instructing an agent also shows up as role: "user").

Yea, this is something I'd appreciate to know as well.

@ravishrawal I have tried three different models, Claude, Gemini and Deepseek. Can say Gemini(at times) and Deepseek does not do this when instructed(never tried without).

Hey Monali, Thanks so much! It is actually kind of urgent for one of our launches - basically when I pull up a user’s chat history I have no good way of selecting only the interactions between user & team leader (and not selecting team leader-agent transactions). Thanks for your help :)

Hi @ravishrawal ! Can you please share some details regarding your Team configuration. Are you using coordinate mode? The storage on the Team captures the interaction between the User and the Team leader where all Team leader messages have the assistant or tool role unless changed via the model.

Hey @ravishrawal just to clarify Where do you get that list of messages though? Are you somehow combining team and member messages... are you referring to streaming events?

But in general-
In the team session storage, the team session has session -> memory -> runs which has all the team runs. Each run has only the messages between the user and the team leader, but includes tool calls, which includes transfers to members, but it doesn't include all the messages of that member.
The member_runs has the runs for the member itself.

@kausmeows my above json output is the messages field from session -> memory -> runs. Seems like from_history = false is addressing this - is that the intended behaviour? If so, still wondering why it shows up as a user message. We are on Agno 1.5.8.

Yes we use agno v2.0.11
Upon further inspection I think it is by design, the problem is in _setup_delegate_task_to_member :

          history.append(Message(role="user", content=member_agent_task))

          history.append(member_agent_task)

Here the member role when creating a team is passed as a user message and then when one calls GET /sessions/{sessionID}, you get all of the interactions between the team and the agent. The thing is, we expected it to be only the interactions between the team and the user. Because when we display it, it shows this member role in the ui, as an user message.
The workaround we found is to use: GET /sessions/{sessionId}/runs To get all the runs and then get the latest run that has a team_id not an agent_id. This is the only way to get the right chat history between the team and the user.

Ok i see @MarioMarkov

this is known. It is easy to get all the runs for a team, but that is a mix of member and team leader runs. I think from our side we need to just add convenience functions to get one or the other.
And yes you can simply filter by team_id vs agent_id, which is ok for now

But we will add that, or at least extend our "chat_history" functions to allow for filtering. Thanks for bringing this up
